The FBI is working with local police to figure out if a recent string of burglaries at the homes of famous athletes is connected to a larger crime ring, possibly one from South America. Two senior law enforcement officials shared this update, but they said it’s still too early to say who’s behind the crimes. They also mentioned the investigation could change direction as they gather more information.
The homes of two key Kansas City Chiefs players, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce, were robbed just hours apart last month. Police reports show Mahomes’ house in Belton, Missouri, was broken into around midnight on October 6. The report didn’t name Mahomes, but the address matches his known home. It didn’t say what, if anything, was stolen.
The very next day, Kelce’s home in Leawood, Kansas, was also targeted. Police say about $20,000 was stolen from his house, according to reports.
But that’s not all. Milwaukee Bucks player Bobby Portis posted a video on Instagram on November 3, explaining that his “prized possessions” were stolen from his home while his team played the day before.
In September, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley Jr. was also a victim of a burglary. Thieves broke into his house while he was at a Minnesota Vikings game.
The Medina Police Department in Minnesota is investigating Conley’s case and working with law enforcement from other states to see if these burglaries are connected. They’re aware of the other incidents and are looking into whether they are all part of the same crime spree. However, they haven’t confirmed if the cases are linked yet.
