FBI Offers $25,000 Reward for Information on Ballot Box Fires in Pacific Northwest

Date:

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the individual responsible for recent ballot box fires in Oregon and Washington. These incidents, which occurred in late October, have raised significant concerns about election security and voter confidence.

On October 28, incendiary devices were placed inside ballot drop boxes in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington. In Portland, the fire suppression system activated promptly, limiting damage to three ballots. However, in Vancouver, the fire destroyed hundreds of ballots before being extinguished. Authorities have linked these attacks to a similar incident on October 8 in Vancouver, where an incendiary device was found but did not cause damage.

The suspect is described as a white male between 30 and 40 years old, with a medium to thin build and possible metalworking or welding skills. Investigators are also seeking information about a dark-colored 2001-2004 Volvo S-60 sedan, believed to be connected to the incidents.

These attacks have prompted election officials to implement enhanced security measures, including increased surveillance and more frequent ballot collections. Voters whose ballots were affected have been contacted and provided with options to ensure their votes are counted.

The FBI’s involvement underscores the seriousness of these acts, which are viewed as direct attacks on the democratic process. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in safeguarding the integrity of elections.

These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges in securing election infrastructure and maintaining public trust in the electoral system. As investigations continue, the focus remains on preventing future attacks and ensuring that all votes are accurately counted.
