The Marauder’s Map from the Harry Potter movies has just set a new record as the most expensive prop ever sold from the franchise!
This famous map, which first appeared in Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban, was sold for a whopping $299,250 at the Propstore’s Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction on November 14.
What makes this auction even more special is that the money raised will go to help David Holmes, the stunt double who worked with Daniel Radcliffe. David became a quadriplegic after a serious accident on set in 2009. While practicing a fight scene for Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1, he broke his neck, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down.
David, now 43, was at the auction to introduce the Marauder’s Map, and it meant a lot to him to see the item go for such a high price. The CEO of Propstore, Stephen Lane, mentioned in a statement, “It’s been a meaningful auction, with David joining us in the room. This record-breaking sale is just one part of a three-day event, and we invite fans and collectors to join in.”
Before the auction, David shared the emotional story behind why he decided to sell the map. In an Instagram post, he explained that while going through some old items from his time on the Harry Potter set, he found the actual Marauder’s Map that was used in the movie. He had kept it alongside get-well cards from his time in rehab after the accident.
David wrote about how life had been tough, especially this past year. He mentioned that he was scammed out of his savings in cryptocurrency, money he and his girlfriend (who also has a disability) had set aside for trips. The loss was a huge setback for them. “Being a quadriplegic comes with so many costs—care, equipment, adapted vehicles—so I had no choice but to sell this special piece of my past,” David said.
The auction of the Marauder’s Map is not just a chance for Harry Potter fans to own a piece of movie history, but also a way to support someone who gave so much to the franchise.
