Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney has opened up about what she sees as “fake” claims of female empowerment in the entertainment industry. She made the comments in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, where she responded to some harsh words from Hollywood producer Carol Baum, who earlier this year criticized Sweeney’s looks and acting skills. At the time, Sweeney’s team called Baum’s comments “shameful.”
Now, Sweeney is speaking out for herself. She says the comments are part of a bigger problem in the industry, where women are often pitted against each other instead of supporting one another.
“It’s so upsetting to see women tearing other women down,” Sweeney said. “Especially when women who have already found success in their careers see younger women working hard to reach their own dreams, but instead of cheering them on, they try to discredit everything they’ve done.”
Sweeney also called out the idea that the entertainment industry promotes women empowering each other. She believes it’s just a front and that the real conversations behind the scenes are very different.
She explained that, for a long time, society has taught women that only one can be on top — whether it’s the leading lady in a movie, the one who wins the man, or the top of any career. Because of this, women often feel like they have to compete with each other instead of supporting one another.
“I’m still figuring it out,” she said. “But why am I being attacked when I’m just trying my best?”
Sweeney, who’s been nominated for Emmys for her roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus, is currently working on a biopic about legendary boxer Christy Martin. She recently shared some behind-the-scenes photos of herself on set, showing off the results of her intense training. In her post, she described Martin as “a true champion” who fought both inside and outside the ring, and she’s excited to bring Martin’s inspiring story to life.
