In a shocking and deadly stabbing spree through New York City on Monday, three people—a woman and two men—were fatally attacked in what police described as an hourslong, seemingly unprovoked series of assaults.
The first incident occurred at 8:22 a.m. ET near 444 W. 19th Street, where a man was stabbed. About two hours later, at 10:27 a.m., another man was attacked near 500 E. 30th Street. Both victims were rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Shortly after, at 10:55 a.m., a woman was stabbed near East 42nd Street and First Avenue, close to the United Nations headquarters. She was initially reported to be in critical condition but later succumbed to her injuries, according to a New York City police spokesperson.
Suspect Apprehended
Authorities quickly identified Ramon Rivera, 51, as the suspect responsible for the attacks. Rivera was apprehended shortly after the final stabbing at 46th Street and First Avenue. Police have stated they are not seeking any other suspects in connection with the incident.
Criminal History and Mental Health Concerns
Rivera has a lengthy criminal record, with eight arrests in New York City over the past year alone. These include seven felony charges—such as burglary and attempted assault on a police officer—and one misdemeanor. Public records also reveal that Rivera has had previous run-ins with law enforcement in three other states.
Officials disclosed that Rivera has a documented history of mental health issues. However, it remains unclear if these concerns were a factor in the attacks.
Legal Representation
As of Monday night, it was uncertain whether Rivera had secured legal representation. A spokesperson for the New York County Defender Services, which often provides public defenders, stated that it was unclear if their office would represent him, as he has yet to be arraigned.
